About 2010: The Graphic Action Game
2010: The Graphic Action Game is a puzzle/maze game with elements from 2010: Odyssey Two where the player must save the Discovery from crashing onto the surface of Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io. The player must choose one of about five circuits to work on in one of the ship's critical systems: Engine, Power, Communications, Life Support, and the HAL 9000. Successful power routing of a circuit makes each system slowly come on-line. It takes three powered circuits for minimum function, but four provides more leeway for success. On-Line engines and power can be activated for an orbital boost, but too long a burn will damage circuit components. HAL 9000 can power undamaged circuits you assign to him, although at a much slower pace than the player. Communications allow a powered HAL 9000 to inform you of success/failure at powering a circuit assigned to him. Life Support gives more protection against EMPs damaging powered circuits, which require repair and repowering.

A Coleco-published keypad-overlay cart from the console's final stretch, cheap loose and only really worth owning with its overlay.
Coleco published 2010: The Graphic Action Game for the ColecoVision in early 1985, with Tom Fulton credited as developer. It arrived as the console's life was ending: Computer Entertainer's January 1985 issue ran it as a sneak preview alongside Spy Hunter, and its first-quarter 1985 release list had Coleco's Cabbage Patch Kids Picture Show, Choplifter, Tapper and The Dam Busters on the same schedule.
Little period criticism of this particular cartridge survives in the sources we have, so there is no review to lean on. It sits among the keypad-overlay games, which makes it a title where the packaging matters as much as the program.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 10 | January 1985 | Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★ |
“Is that ALL there is?? The premise of the game is very simple … a definite PASS.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Before you buy
Plays with the standard controller, but this is a keypad-overlay game, so a complete copy includes the overlay; reproduction overlays exist if yours is missing. The box, manual and overlay account for most of the value of a complete copy, since loose carts are among the cheaper Coleco titles. Check the overlay is present before paying a boxed price.
