Safety Tips

Trade with confidence. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself and have a great experience on The Game Traders.

General Safety

The Game Traders is designed to make peer-to-peer trading safe and straightforward. Every transaction is processed through secure payments, and our platform includes tools to help you verify who you're trading with.

That said, no marketplace can eliminate all risk. Staying informed and following a few simple practices will help you trade with confidence and avoid the most common issues.

How the Platform Protects You

  • Secure payments — All transactions go through Stripe, so your financial details are never shared with other users.
  • User profiles — Ratings, reviews, and verification badges help you assess who you're dealing with.
  • Reporting tools — You can report suspicious listings or users at any time, and our team reviews every report.
  • In-platform messaging — Keep all communication on The Game Traders so there's a record if anything goes wrong.
Take a moment to review a user's profile, ratings, and past sales before committing to a transaction. A little research goes a long way.

Avoiding Scams

Most transactions on The Game Traders go smoothly, but it's important to know the warning signs of a potential scam. Here are the most common red flags:

Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals

If a price seems unrealistically low for the item, be cautious. For example, a sealed copy of a rare game listed at a fraction of its market value is worth questioning. Scammers often use low prices to attract quick, impulsive purchases.

Pressure Tactics

Be wary of users who pressure you to act immediately — messages like "you need to pay right now or I'll sell to someone else" or "this deal expires in 10 minutes." Legitimate sellers are happy to give you time to make a decision.

Requests to Go Off-Platform

A major red flag is when someone asks you to complete the transaction outside of The Game Traders — for example, asking you to pay via Venmo, Cash App, wire transfer, or gift cards. These payments have no buyer protection and cannot be reversed.

New Accounts with No History

A brand-new account with no reviews, no profile photo, and an unusually attractive listing deserves extra scrutiny. This doesn't mean all new sellers are scammers — but it's a reason to look more carefully at the listing details.

If something feels off about a transaction, trust your instincts. It's always better to walk away from a deal than to lose money. You can report suspicious activity at any time.

Secure Payments

All payments on The Game Traders are processed through Stripe, a trusted payment processor used by millions of businesses worldwide. Here's what that means for you:

How Stripe Protects You

  • Your card details are never shared with sellers. Stripe handles all payment processing securely.
  • Encryption — All payment data is encrypted in transit and at rest using industry-standard protocols.
  • Dispute protection — If you don't receive your item or it's significantly different from described, you can dispute the charge.

Never Pay Outside the Platform

This is the single most important safety rule. If a seller asks you to pay via Venmo, PayPal Friends & Family, Zelle, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards — do not do it. These methods have no buyer protection, and we cannot help you recover funds sent outside of our platform.

If anyone asks you to pay outside of The Game Traders, report them immediately. This is against our terms of service and is almost always a scam.

Protecting Your Information

Your personal information should stay personal. Here's what you need to know about how your data is handled and how to keep it safe.

What Other Users Can See

  • Public: Your username, profile photo, bio, ratings, and listings.
  • Shared during a transaction: Your shipping address is shared with the seller only after payment is completed, so they can ship your item.
  • Never shared: Your email address, payment details, and password.

Keep It Private

  • Never share your password, email, phone number, or full address in messages.
  • Don't click links sent by other users in messages — navigate to pages directly through the site.
  • Use a strong, unique password for your account. Don't reuse passwords from other sites.

Phishing Attempts

Be cautious of emails that look like they're from The Game Traders but ask you to click a link and enter your password. Our legitimate emails come from noreply@thegametraders.com and will never ask for your password. When in doubt, go directly to the site by typing the URL in your browser.

If someone in a message asks for your email, phone number, or other personal details, do not share them. There's no legitimate reason for another user to need this information — everything happens through the platform.

Recognizing Fake Listings

Learning to spot fake or misleading listings can save you time and money. Here are the signs to watch for:

Stock or Stolen Photos

Legitimate sellers typically photograph their own items. Watch out for overly professional product shots, images with watermarks from other sites, or photos that look like they were pulled from a retailer's website. If the photos look too polished or generic, ask the seller for additional photos showing the actual item.

Vague or Copy-Pasted Descriptions

A genuine seller will describe their specific item — its condition, any flaws, what's included. A vague description like "great condition, works perfectly" with no specifics, or text that reads like it was copied from a product page, is a yellow flag.

Unrealistic Pricing

A sealed, first-edition Pokemon booster box listed for $50 when the market price is $500+ is almost certainly not legitimate. Use common sense — if the price doesn't match the item's known value, there's usually a reason.

Multiple Identical Listings

If one seller has many listings for the same rare or high-value item, that's suspicious. Most individual sellers have one copy of an item, not ten.

When in doubt, message the seller with specific questions about the item. A real seller will be happy to provide details, additional photos, or proof of authenticity.

Safe Selling Practices

Sellers also need to protect themselves. Following these practices helps prevent disputes and builds your reputation as a trusted trader.

Always Use Tracked Shipping

Ship every order with a tracking number and enter it on your dashboard. Without proof of delivery, you have no way to demonstrate the item was shipped if a buyer claims they never received it. For high-value items, consider requiring signature confirmation.

Document Item Condition

Before shipping, take clear photos of the item and its packaging. If a buyer claims the item arrived damaged or wasn't as described, these photos serve as evidence of what you sent. For trading cards, photograph the card front, back, and edges.

Be Honest in Your Descriptions

Accurately describe condition, including any flaws, scratches, missing accessories, or cosmetic damage. This prevents disputes and leads to better reviews. A buyer who receives exactly what was described is a happy buyer.

Pack Items Securely

Use appropriate packaging for the item type. Games and consoles need bubble wrap or padding. Trading cards should be in top loaders or sleeves inside a rigid mailer. A damaged item due to poor packaging reflects on you as a seller. See our Shipping Guide for detailed packing tips.

Never ship an item before payment is confirmed on your dashboard. Wait until the order status shows "Paid" before packing and shipping.

What To Do If Something Goes Wrong

Even with precautions, issues can occasionally arise. Here's how to handle common problems:

Item Not Received

First, check the tracking information on your dashboard. Shipping can sometimes take longer than expected. If tracking shows delivered but you haven't received it, contact the seller through the messaging system. If you can't resolve it, contact our support team.

Item Not as Described

If the item you received is significantly different from the listing description or photos, message the seller first to try to resolve it. Most sellers want to make things right. If you can't reach an agreement, contact our support team for assistance.

Reporting a User or Listing

If you encounter a suspicious listing, inappropriate behavior, or a user who isn't acting in good faith, use the report button on their profile or listing page. Include as much detail as possible — what happened, any relevant messages, and screenshots if applicable. Our team reviews every report.

Contacting Support

If you need help that goes beyond what you can resolve with the other party, reach out through our Contact Us page. We typically respond within 24-48 hours. Include your order details and a description of the issue so we can help as quickly as possible.

Keep all communication within the platform's messaging system. This creates a record that our support team can reference if you need to file a report or dispute.
