A simple but cheerful shoot 'em up that magazines rated as good fun and short-lived.

Aerial Assault is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega. It came out in North America in July 1990 and in Europe the same year, and a Game Gear version followed in 1992. You play a Freedom Fighter who has to destroy five targets, among them a bomber, two cliff fortresses and an enemy ship.

Mean Machines Sega's games guide described it as a horizontally scrolling shooter in the mould of UN Squadron, stacked with power-ups. It found the graphics quite simple and the sound unappealing, but called it quite good fun, with the warning that it will not take long to complete.

“The graphics and sound are adequate but nothing speciál in this early shoot-’em-up.”

— Sega Pro, November 1991

“Aerial Assault is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up in the mould of UN Squadron stacked with power-ups and flaming death. The graphics are quite simple and the sound is unappealing, but Aerial Assault is quite good fun. Be warned however, it won't take long to complete.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Ancient, but relies on old-fashioned principles of keeping the player busy. This shoot-’em-up is still quite a frenzy. Graphics and sound are now dated.”

— Sega Pro, June 1993

How the Sega Master System version differs

The first target, the Vinsk, is an ordinary ship on the Master System, where the Game Gear version makes it a flying battleship.

Before you buy

There is a US cart and a European cart. The European one costs much less loose, and a complete European copy is also well below a complete US one, so unless you specifically want the US box, buy European. Loose, this sits above the middle of the US-released carts, so it is not a throwaway cart. Make sure the manual is there on a complete copy, since it is the part most often missing.
