About Aero Fighters 2

The game is played with two buttons, with the A button firing projectiles from the plane and the B button launching a special bomb attack which uses a bomb from a limited stock of bombs. Power projectiles can be obtained by destroying buildings and armored enemy planes. There are two types of Power projectiles: "P" Power projectiles, that increases the plane's firepower by one level, and "F" Power projectiles, that increases the plane's firepower to the maximum level instantly. The maximum level only lasts for a limited amount of shots. When certain ground enemies and buildings are destroyed, money bonuses appear which give a random amount of points each. When the player reaches the end of the stage, the player has to face a boss ship.

A short, colorful vertical shooter from Video System that a good player can finish in an hour, and one of the pricier carts from SNK's peak years.

Aero Fighters 2 is a vertically scrolling shooter developed by Video System and published by SNK, the second game in the Aero Fighters series. The Japanese AES cart followed the arcade release by about five weeks in 1994, and a Neo Geo CD version came a month after that.

It is not a deep game. Next Generation, reviewing the Neo Geo version, said players with any skill would beat it on the easy or normal setting in under an hour. Spanish magazine HobbyConsolas nevertheless put it among its twenty best games for the Neo Geo AES in 2014, so it has its fans as a quick, pretty arcade session rather than a long campaign.

How it was made

Developed by Video System and published by SNK; the arcade original ran on Neo Geo MVS hardware.

What the press said at the time

“But while the graphics and sound are arcade quality, the game itself grows tedious very quickly. Players with any skill will beat the game on the easy or normal level in under an hour.”

— Next Generation, January 1995

Before you buy

Both the Japanese cart and SNK of America's US release exist, and the US cart sells for more, especially complete. The price puts this in the range where a swapped-board conversion is worth a thought, so ask a seller for a photo of the board: a genuine AES board is marked NEO-AEG. A complete copy has the hard plastic case and manual, and the cart is a collector's purchase now that the arcade version is cheaply playable through Hamster's ACA NeoGeo release.
