A competent two-player shooter from Video System that period reviewers found intense but short on fresh ideas, and a mid-priced cart by the library's standards.

Aero Fighters 3 is a vertically scrolling shooter developed by Video System and published by SNK, set partly in London and Tokyo and playable by one or two players. The Japanese AES cart followed the arcade release by about five weeks, in November 1995, and a Neo Geo CD version came a month after that.

GamePro's review of the AES cart praised the intense action and the audio but found the gameplay short on fresh ideas and not as fun as Aero Fighters 2. That is a fair summary: it is a solid shooter in a library that has several better ones, so the reason to own the cartridge is the format and the co-op, not a gap in the genre.

Before you buy

The Japanese and US carts are separate releases. A complete copy in the hard case with its manual sells for several times what a loose cart does, and complete copies turn up only occasionally. At that price an arcade board in an AES shell is the risk worth checking: ask for photos of the board and look for the NEO-AEG marking and gold edge fingers rather than NEO-MVS. The arcade version is cheaply playable on modern consoles through ACA NeoGeo, which makes this cart a collector's purchase.
