About Air Rescue

Air Rescue is similar to Choplifter!. You are a driver of a helicopter and the object is to rescue hostages without being shot down by soldiers, jeeps, tanks, choppers, and ground-based missiles, and bring them back to base. A maximum of four hostages can fit into the helicopter at any given time, so it is necessary to make more than one trip. You can choose from a variety of weapons that you can use to shoot down enemies. There are five rounds, which take you through theme parks, burning skyscrapers, army bases, sunken submarines, and caverns. The round ends when you have taken the required number of hostages to the bases.

A side-scrolling helicopter shooter that shares a name with the arcade game but little else, and a mid-priced European pickup.

Air Rescue came out only in Europe, in July 1992, published by Sega and developed by SIMS. The Master System game is a side-scroller with completely different levels and a less overtly military theme than the arcade game it is named after, so it plays more like a tie-in than a conversion. It is similar in spirit to Choplifter.

A contemporary review praised the visuals and the playability and liked the co-operative two-player option, though it said the game fails to inspire quite as much as it might.

Arcade

  • Arcade. The arcade game has a first-person cockpit view with full 3D movement, and ran on Sega System 32 hardware.

Before you buy

This is a European cart, and its loose price sits about at the middle of the European-only games. A complete copy costs noticeably more than a loose one, and the manual is the part most often missing.
