About Air-Sea Battle

There are six basic types of game available in Air-Sea Battle, and for each type, there are one or two groups of three games, for a total of twenty-seven game variants. Within each group, variant one is the standard game, variant two features guided missiles which can be directed left or right after being fired, and variant three pits a single player (using the right gun) against a computer opponent, which simply fires continuously at the default angle or speed. In every game, players shoot targets (enemy planes or ships, shooting gallery targets, or each other, depending on the game chosen) competing to get a higher score. Each round lasts two minutes and sixteen seconds; the player with the higher score after time expires is the winner, unless one player wins (and ends the game) by reaching 99 points before the time is up.

Larry Kaplan's 1977 launch-era shooting gallery, an award winner in its day, cheap and on Atari 50.

Air-Sea Battle is a 1977 fixed shooter and Larry Kaplan's first game for Atari, which he joined in 1976. You aim or move a gun to shoot down targets across several themed modes, which Kaplan built with Combat, then in development, in mind. Historians link its gameplay to arcade games of the time such as Anti-Aircraft, Sea Wolf and Destroyer.

Sears sold it as Target Fun and used it as the pack-in game for its Tele-Games version of the console. Video magazine named it Best Target Game in 1980. It is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.

How it was made

Designed by Larry Kaplan, his first Atari game, and released in September 1977, with a PAL release in 1978. Sears sold it as Target Fun and bundled it with its Tele-Games console.

“but it certainly hasn't dated. It has, rather, aged gracefully and is still one of Atari's outstanding software selections.”

“The steerable missile greatly enhances this game, which is one of the finest head-to-head contests in the VCS library.”

  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Air-Sea Battle (CX2602) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.

Before you buy

Low risk; a common cart. Four listings are priced: the standard cart, a Text Label cart, a Text # Side Label variant priced only as a complete copy, and the Sears Target Fun cart. They are the same game, and loose copies are cheap. Boxed Text Label and Text # Side Label copies cost more than standard boxed copies, so check exactly which label and box are in the photos before paying for one.
