About Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress

In this adventure game you control an explorer who's on his way to fortress Alcazar. To reach Alcazar you are travelling through a countryside of fortresses and you need to collect several items that you can find along the way. Once you enter the Alcazar fortress you have to search for the crown. The strategy map gives you an overview of the countryside, it's fortresses and your location in it. What perils lurk in these mysterious castles? Which path is quick and safe? The Alcazar castle is three stories high, all other castles have only two stories. To enter a castle you just have to follow the path. Each castle has it's own sought-after objects and these objects are always guarded by the castles main demon. Objects to look for are for example: a rope, a gun, raw meat, water or a raft. Collect them and use them properly to master the legendary Alcazar fortress.

A dungeon adventure from Activision's Tom Loughry that reached the ColecoVision only through Telegames, and it is a collectors' item.

Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress is a dungeon action-adventure created by Tom Loughry at Activision, with graphics by Keri Janssen Longaway. Wikipedia says it came out in 1985 for the Coleco Adam with a port for the ColecoVision, and that a Commodore 64 version followed.

On the ColecoVision it is a Telegames cartridge, not an Activision one, sold only by Telegames, with Cheshire Engineering credited as the developer. The sources document few details about the ColecoVision version beyond that, so the entry stays short.

How it was made

Created by Tom Loughry at Activision with graphics by Keri Janssen Longaway; the ColecoVision version is credited to Cheshire Engineering and published by Telegames.

How the ColecoVision version differs

Only the Adam version of the game supports saving; the ColecoVision version does not, and there are no continues.

Coleco AdamTom Loughry
  • Coleco Adam. The game was released for the Coleco Adam computer, with the ColecoVision version as a port.
  • MSX. The MSX port later served as an inspiration for the PlayStation title Resident Evil, with its mechanics of limited ammo per room.
  • Commodore 64. The game was also ported to the Commodore 64 later.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Four difficulty levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert) are picked on the keypad; the demo mode starts if you wait 30 seconds.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Shortcuts to Alcazar need items: a raft to cross the lake, a ring for the flying carpets and a rope for the broken bridges.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Beginner starts with five explorers and three guns; Advanced and Expert start with two explorers and one gun.

Before you buy

Alcazar is one of Telegames's own releases, so a Telegames copy is the original publisher's pressing rather than a later re-release, but owners report a high failure rate for Telegames cartridges, so test it. The ColecoVisionADAM.com museum list marks it as Rare. Telegames sold it in a plastic clamshell with an insert sheet, which counts as a complete box, and box-only reproductions were sold in 1995, so check that the box is not a reproduction. No loose or boxed prices are tracked, so ask for photos before paying a collector's price. Plays with the standard controller.
