About Alien

Fox Video Games made the first leap into licensing the Alien property for video games with what was essentially a Pac-Man clone skinned with elements from the 1979 film. Players controlled a human collecting Alien eggs (dots) and small planet and spaceship symbols (fruits) in a maze abroad the USCSS Nostromo while avoiding Alien drones (ghosts). Drones could be killed by shooting them with a flamethrower or collecting symbols that would stun them (flashing dots).

Fox's 1982 Alien cartridge is a Pac-Man-style maze game with a film license, and the film license is most of the appeal.

Doug Neubauer programmed Alien for Fox Video Games, released in December 1982. You move through a spaceship's hallways destroying alien eggs while avoiding the adult alien. Some modes give you a flamethrower to fend aliens off, or items that make them vulnerable, and clearing a maze leads to a bonus round where you race to the top of the screen for a prize.

Reviews from The Video Game Update and IGN found it derivative of Pac-Man, and reviewers were divided on whether its xenomorphs looked like Venus flytraps or simply came off as cute. Neubauer also programmed Mega Force and M*A*S*H for Fox.

How it was made

Programmed by Doug Neubauer for Fox Video Games, 20th Century Fox's video game division, alongside his Mega Force and M*A*S*H.

“We found the graphics only fair, and game play is just too much like other games already available to create much interest on the part of gamers look for a new challenge. Not recommended.”

— Computer Entertainer, December 1982

“While the graphics are cute, the play mechanics are too unoriginal to merit much excitement.”

— Arcade Express, March 27, 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Low counterfeit risk. Loose copies are inexpensive, and boxed copies cost many times more because of interest from Alien collectors. Inspect the box on a complete copy, since that is most of what you are paying for.
