A poorly received TV-show brawler that is only worth owning for completists.
This is the Genesis port of American Gladiators, published by GameTek in North America in January 1993 and developed by Imagitec Design. It is based on the television game show, and on the Genesis the game was reworked to be a more faithful copy of the series than the earlier NES game. Human Cannonball is missing from this version.
Reviews were harsh. The Genesis and Super NES versions were covered heavily and mostly received very negative reviews, though one reviewer found the Genesis port the best of the versions.

| Sega Pro Issue 36 | September 1994 | 67% |
“But if you like the show, save your cash for the live event (snigger), as this game is one of the most crudely executed pieces of piffle in all Christendom.”
“First we had wrestling giants, now flesh-pounding Gladiators. Six events to compete in and master before you’re a true Gladiátor.”

How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Human Cannonball event is not available on the Genesis version.
The Genesis version, like the SNES and Amiga ones, is a more faithful copy of the TV show than the NES game, with a tournament mode for up to 16 players.

- NES. The NES version differs greatly from the later ports, turning the events into side-scrolling and overhead mini-levels that only partially resembled the real events.
- Amiga. Amiga Action scored the Amiga version 80%.
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits about at the middle, so it is easy to buy at a fair price. Check that a listing is the Genesis cartridge, since GameTek also made the game for other systems.
