A busy, colorful Konami platformer that suits the cartoon, and a bargain in North America.
Konami made two different platformers called Animaniacs in 1994, one for the Super NES and one for the Genesis, and this page is the Genesis game. In it the Warner siblings Yakko, Wakko and Dot open a pop-culture shop to get closer to their favorite movie stars. It has four main levels that can be played in any order. It came out in North America in November 1994 and in Europe in December 1994.
Game Players found the Genesis game above average in looks but with smaller characters than the Super NES one, and noted more hidden items and more strategy. GameFan compared its action to Gambare Goemon / Mystical Ninja, and GamePro judged that it suited the show's preadolescent audience. Next Generation gave it three stars out of five, saying it lacked innovation but offered plenty of fun.
What the press said at the time
“Still, it has to be said that Animaniacs is more instantly appealing than any other game of its type, and the puzzles are generally more simple and fun to solve.”
“The graphics aren’t as good as the SNES version, and the music lacks that sizzlin’ SNES sound chip, but in the end it doesn’t matter much.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis and Super NES versions are two different Konami platform games sharing a name, rather than one game ported.
Game Players said the Genesis game's characters are smaller than in the SNES version but that it has more hidden stuff and more strategy.

- Game Boy. The Game Boy port, by Factor 5, has only three levels because of space constraints.
- Super NES. In the Super NES game, players move through a linear three-dimensional playing field to collect 24 script pages.
Before you buy
Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs about twice as much as the US one. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy, and the box copy usually costs more complete. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
