About Aquattack

Aquattack is an action game with four levels which partly have varying gameplay mechanics. In level one and two, the player mans a motor boat which needs to travel a certain distance from left to right. Of course there is a lot of enemy opposition which needs to be avoided. Some enemies can be shot while others are out of reach. Fuel is limited and needs to replenished by collecting refreshments dropped by allied planes. Level three is similar; the player uses a hang glider now. There are different enemies to fight and no fuel to collect. In level four, there is a guarded energy field to cross in order to bring four bombs to the other side. However, only one bomb can be transported at once and there is a time limit. After beating all four levels, they loop with more difficult enemies and faster playing speed. The player can take nine hits and the overall goal is to earn as many points as possible before the unavoidable final death occurs.

An obscure Interphase adventure for the ColecoVision that few players seem to have noticed, and a cheap way to own a rare corner of the library.

Aquattack came from Interphase, a company that had started on the Intellivision and moved to the ColecoVision in 1984 with this and Squish 'Em Featuring Sewer Sam. Computer Entertainer previewed it as a four-scene adventure game and wondered aloud whether it was the first adventure game for ColecoVision owners.

Almost nothing else was written about the cartridge at the time. The trade press listed it for a spring 1984 release, and it came out in May 1984. No period review of how it plays has been found beyond that four-scene structure.

How it was made

Published by Interphase; no separate developer is credited.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 2May 1984Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★

“We never could get all that coordinated … This one is more trouble than it's worth.”

— Computer Entertainer, May 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • Voice or not?. Electronic Games (May 1984) grouped Aquattack with Squish 'Em as a game achieving voice synthesis without extra hardware, while Computer Entertainer's earlier preview called it a non-voice game. The magazines disagreed, and the cartridge itself would settle it.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The mission is aborted and the game ends if the defenders inflict more than nine damage points on Captain Blitztek.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. In the third phase the hydroship is swapped for a hang-glider, and the keypad is no longer needed; side-buttons control glider speed and forward fire.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The final phase has a 99 count time limit for carrying four hydrogen bombs from the bottom of the energy field to the top.

Before you buy

Plays with the standard ColecoVision controller; nothing in the record suggests a keypad overlay or special controller, and none should be expected. It is a US release from a small third-party publisher, so condition of the label and shell matters more than hunting. The price row shows loose copies only, so a seller offering it boxed is asking you to take the packaging on trust: ask for photos of the box and manual.
