Three Atari classics on one cartridge, of which only Missile Command impressed Mean Machines, and a cheap pickup for the curious.

Arcade Smash Hits is a compilation published by Virgin Games and developed by Images Software, released in Europe in August 1992. It bundles three Atari coin-ops: Breakout, Centipede and Missile Command. The visuals were upgraded over the originals, and Breakout looks closer to Arkanoid than to the 1976 game.

Mean Machines Sega thought it a wasted opportunity: Missile Command was the only half-decent one of the three, and none was an accurate conversion of the arcade original.

How it was made

Developed by Images Software and published by Virgin Games. Anthony Mack is credited as programmer, Andy Pang as artist and Mat Symmonds as composer.

“Three games in one’s a fab idea. Even though they’re old, the cart represents great value for money.”

— Sega Force, August 1992

“This is potentially a great game. Missile Command, Breakout, and Centipede are converted onto the Master System and bundled together on one car¬ tridge. The only problem is, Missile Command is the only half-way decent game out of the lot of them and none of them at all are accurate conversions of the original. A wasted opportunity.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“A smart idea from Virgin was their Arcade Smash Hits compilation cart, three coin-op classics crammed into one little black box: Break Out (69%), Missile Command (81%) and Centipede (55%). The overall cart received 85% (a little high!).”

— Sega Force, February 1993

“All the games are fairly basic in content, but the addictiveness and playability shines through.”

— Sega Pro, July 1993

Before you buy

It was released only in Europe, so the European cart is the one to buy. It is cheap loose, below the middle for a European-only game, and the look-alike risk is low. If you want a complete copy, check for the manual.
