About Astérix

The Romans have kidnapped Getafix, who is the only one that can brew the magic potion the Gauls need to stand against the Romans. Asterix and Obelix embark on a journey to free him. You can play as either Asterix or Obelix which play slightly differently (Obelix is slower, but can manipulate objects, Asterix moves faster).

A comic-book platformer that Master System owners in Europe took to the top of the chart.

Asterix is a 1992 platform game based on the Asterix comic books, developed and published by Sega for the Master System alone. It came out in Europe in March 1992, and Brazil also had a 1992 release. In July 1992 it reached number one on the Master System chart published by the British magazine Sega Force, ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog and Enduro Racer.

“Take the mantle of both Asterix and Obelix in this new platform adventure. The graphics are great, the sound's not so bad and it's pretty playable. Unfortunately, there are a few instant-death frustra¬ tions and pointless infinite continues. Still, overall it's a pretty good game.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“One of our favourite MS games (81%), Asterix was ‘instantly playable and totally addictive”

— Sega Force, January 1993

“Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this tour de force of arcade adventuring. The graphics could háve been taken from the comic book, and the incidental music is more than just that.”

— Sega Pro, July 1993

“Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this tour de force of arcade adventuring. The graphics couid háve been taken from the comic book, and the incidental music is more than just that. New Age MS excellence.”

— Sega Pro, August 1993

Before you buy

This is a European cart, and Brazil had its own 1992 release. Loose, it sits a little below the middle of the games released in Europe but not North America for price, so it is an easy one to pick up. Look for a copy with the manual, which is the part most often missing from a complete one.
