About ATP Tour Championship Tennis

There are three game modes: Exhibition match, Exhibition Tournament (where the player competes in a 32-player tournament), ATP Senior Tour Event (where the player chooses one of the retired players and competes in a 8-player tournament) and the ATP Tour, where it's possible to create a player and develop his skills by winning (or simply doing well) on tournaments, with one extra point on each round won. Gameplay uses a simple 3-button layout, where the A button lobs the ball, B performs a controlled passing shot and C allows the fastest top spin shots, with the directional pad affecting the direction and depth of the shot.

A solid Sega tennis game with real depth that is one of the cheapest US carts around.

ATP Tour Championship Tennis was developed by SIMS and published by Sega, reaching Europe on 10 February 1995 and North America in March 1995. Electronic Games described a four-player game with 32 current players plus eight legends.

GamePro said it scores a decisive win over EA's International Tennis Tour, praising its many options, solid controls and adjustable difficulty, though it found the scaling of the ball sometimes distracting. GameFan thought the graphics broke no new ground but the overall design was good.

What the press said at the time

“A solid simulation, built on the back of Wimbledon. Low on excitement, but playable.”

— Sega Magazine, March 1995

“The game's good fun against the Computer, a laugh and a half against a human opponent”

— Sega Pro, April 1995

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the cheapest. The European cart usually costs much more than the US one, and a complete European copy costs far more. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair. Sega Retro lists it as working with Sega's Team Player. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy.
