One of the earliest electronic backgammon games, a cheap Atari cart whose Sears box is the collectible part.

Atari released Backgammon for the VCS in November 1979, with Craig Nelson credited as designer. It was one of the earliest electronic versions of the board game.

Its cover art is by Cliff Spohn, who painted the covers for many early Atari games.

How it was made

Designed by Craig Nelson and released by Atari in November 1979, also sold by Sears. Cover art by Cliff Spohn.

Worth knowing

  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Backgammon (CX2617) in its top tier: dealers paid $26.50 against a suggested retail price of $39.95.

Before you buy

Low risk. Three labels are priced: the standard Atari cart, a cart PriceCharting lists as "Text Label", and a Sears Tele-Games cart. All are cheap loose. Boxed Tele-Games copies cost far more than boxed Atari copies, so if you are paying for a complete Sears copy, check the box closely and confirm it is the Tele-Games release.
