About Barnyard Blaster
You and Grandpa are down on the farm. There are critters, bottles, and varmints everywhere -- in the barn, in the yard, and in the cornfield. Grandpa has given you an Atari light gun to help protect the farm. The moving targets are a challenge. Can you hit them? If not, try the veggies! They're fun to shoot at. In the barnyard, bottles and cans on the fence provide great practive for warming up the old shootin' iron. But perfect aim alone isn't enough. You'll need speed, too. In the cornfield, birds swoop from the sky and rabbits scamper among the stalks, Owls and other pests appear inside a barn. Each scene can only be reached by hitting enough targest in the scene before. Once you zero in on some fancy shooting scores, Gramps offers you a bonus round by tossing target bottles in the air.

A light-gun-only cart that is cheap to find and ranked last of the 7800's gun games by one retrospective reviewer.
Barnyard Blaster was written by James Zalewski and published by Atari Corporation for the 7800 and for the Atari 8-bit computers. It is a shooting gallery that needs the XG-1 light gun, and unlike Crossbow and Alien Brigade it has no joystick mode.
A Current Notes reviewer in 1990 found the 7800 cartridge an exact duplicate of the XE version, and questioned whether the light-gun-only design made sense, since the gun was not sold separately in enough places to justify it. A retrospective reviewer at Video Game Critic was harsher and called it the worst of the 7800 light gun games.
How it was made
Written by James Zalewski; published by Atari Corporation for the 7800.
Worth knowing
- From the 7800 manual. Two-player games share one light gun.
- From the 7800 manual. Up to 40 bullets per screen.
- From the 7800 manual. Select toggles the music on or off.
Before you buy
Common, with a modest premium for the box. You need the Atari XG-1 light gun (sold with the XE Game System, never in the game box) and a CRT television, so the cartridge is no use to a joystick-only owner. It carries the Atari color label (CX7859). Compared with the other gun games this is the one to buy last unless you are completing a set.
