Street basketball with punching, two-player ComLynx co-op, and an unlikely spot on Atari 50.
Hamilton and Associates developed it and Atari published it in 1992 — full-contact basketball where fighting is a legitimate strategy, playable co-operatively over ComLynx.
It is one of only six Lynx titles on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration and it is also on Evercade Collection 1, which is unusual visibility for a game of its stature. Like Scrapyard Dog, the pattern suggests clean Atari ownership rather than critical merit.

“Im Vergleich zum sympathischen Hockey kam Atari bei Basketbrawl vom Pfad der Spieltugend gewalt(aet)ig ab... Bestenfalls zu zweit kann Basketbrawl etwas laenger an das Lynx fesseln, alleine schleicht sich trotz mehreren Levels und Passwoertern Langeweile ein. Ernsthafte Sportspieler sollten in jedem Fall die Finger davon lassen. [Compared with the likeable Hockey, Atari strayed violently from the path of gameplay virtue... serious sports players should keep their hands off it entirely.]”
“Basketbrawl combines the skill required of a first-rate sports simulation with the lightning reflexes demanded by the best Ninja-streetfighter games. On the one hand, you shoot hoops, and on the other, you shoot ... well ... guys on the other team.”

Worth knowing
- Six-minute matches, and a password after each. The German magazine Video Games documented the structure in 1992: leave the arena as winner — and alive — after six minutes of play and you are given a password, with roughly half a dozen scenarios each containing several levels. It also recorded the German retail price at 80 Mark.
- Points are the only rule. You lead a team through a fifteen-game tournament against five street gangs, choosing from ten fighters with different power, shooting skill, speed and stamina. Beyond scoring baskets "there are no rules" — you can stab an opponent with a knife or swing a chain into his teeth. Spectators throw knives at random, the referee is violent, and nobody dies: a badly injured player just goes down for a while before rejoining.
Before you buy
Cheap and low-risk. Its sealed price sits slightly below complete, which is thin data — buy on condition, not on label.
