Batman Returns

Atari Explorer's May/June 1992 interview gives the fullest development account of any Lynx game. Programming was by Eric Ginner and Jerome Strach; the visuals team was headed by Susan G. McBride, previously of Klax, Rampage and Warbirds, working with cartoonist Melody Rondeau, Eric Elliott, Robb Mariani, Philip Temple and Eric Blumrich. Mariani was flown in from Atari's Chicago Entertainment Headquarters; Temple and Blumrich were contracted for the project. Sound and music were by Bob Vieira.

The schedule was dictated by the film. Work began in September 1991, but a preliminary synopsis did not arrive until November and stills and a shooting script only in January, at which point programming started. Because the team had committed to shipping alongside the film, they worked "12-hour days during the week, and 10-hour days on weekends, for months" — and had to make special arrangements to keep the air-conditioning running at Atari's Sunnyvale headquarters at weekends.

Designing a game around a film still being made caused specific problems: publicity stills were slow to arrive because each actor had to approve their own image under union and individual contracts, and cuts to the film forced the team to design a replacement wave after scenes it was based on were left on the cutting-room floor.
