About B.C. II: Grog's Revenge
Thor has completed his Quest for Tires. Now he must discover the Meaning of Life. But it won't be easy. The Meaning of Life is hidden away; somewhere in a long maze of mountains. Each mountain is covered with clams and Thor needs to gather 100 clams in order to pay the tolls and advance through each mountain. The only way to Peter and the toll bridge is through the "real scary caves". There are lots of clams in the caves but watch out for stalagmites. Keep Thor's headlight sweeping back and forth for maximum clams. Out of the cave, watch out for Grog, who saves clams from Thor. Thor also has contend with rocks, potholes and pterodactyls (they'll eat his wheel) in his Quest for Clams and the Meaning of Life.

A comic-strip cave-dweller race on the ColecoVision, trimmed to five stages, with a Canadian release that fixed a bug.
B.C. II: Grog's Revenge is the sequel to B.C.'s Quest for Tires and, like it, is based on Johnny Hart's newspaper strip. Sydney Development made the ColecoVision version, and Sierra published it in the United States.
Wikipedia records that the ColecoVision and MSX versions have only five stages, and that a bug in the ColecoVision version was fixed for the Coleco Canada release. Computer and Video Games rated the ColecoVision version 87 percent in 1989 and praised its funny touches and cheerful play. Little else about this cartridge is documented, so this is a short entry.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 7 | October 1984 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
“GROG'S REVENGE has an ideal combination of attributes: great graphics, humor, and both physical and mental challenges. This looks like another winner for Sierra and Sydney.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
How the ColecoVision version differs
The ColecoVision version has only 5 stages, where the Commodore 64 and Coleco Adam versions have 15.
A programming error keeps the ColecoVision version from being completed. The bug was fixed for the Coleco Canada release.
Also on other platforms
Commodore 64 · Coleco Adam · MSX
| ColecoVision | Sydney Development |
- Commodore 64. The Commodore 64 version has 15 stages, five per set, three times as many as the ColecoVision cartridge.
- Coleco Adam. The Coleco Adam version has 15 stages, five per set, three times as many as the ColecoVision cartridge.
- MSX. The MSX version has only 5 stages, and a programming error means none of the MSX releases can be completed.
Before you buy
Needs only the standard controller. Sierra used one box across several systems and told them apart with a sticker, so check that the box or sticker names the ColecoVision before paying for a boxed copy. If you want the bug-fixed version, ask whether the cartridge is the Coleco Canada release, which came in bilingual packaging.
