An oddball one-on-one monster brawler with a cult look, more curious than great.

Beast Wrestler is a one-on-one fighting game for the Genesis in which mutated beasts battle in a wrestling arena, working up to the title of Supreme Beast Wrestler. Riot developed it. It came out in Japan on 29 November 1991 and in North America in March 1992, where Renovation Products published it. The cover art was painted by Yasushi Nirasawa, who worked as a model-builder for Hobby Japan magazine.

Mean Machines described it before release as a one-on-one beat-'em-up in which all manner of slimy beasts fight for supremacy, and the American ad copy promised one or two players and a choice of weird, powerful beasts.

“Colourful, detailed graphics offset by terribie sound and slow jerky gameplay. Don’t be fooled by pretty pictures, there’s nothing nice about this game.”

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. A complete copy means the case, cartridge and manual, and complete copies cost far more than loose ones. Japan got the game first, and the Japanese Mega Drive cart has a different shape from a Western one.
