Imagic's Donkey Kong-style climber, a decent but unspectacular early Imagic game.
Wendell Brown wrote Beauty & the Beast for Imagic, which released it in October 1982. Electronic Games described it as a Donkey Kong-like contest, and Imagic advertised it with Microsurgeon, Atlantis and Demon Attack in its push for the Intellivision. It is single-player only.
Imagic's other Intellivision games got the loudest praise; this one is the solid third in the lineup.
How it was made

What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 7 | October 1982 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★ |
“We found [this a] thoroughly charming game that will definitely appeal to children and [adults alike].”
“the trouble is they they're too tame and predictable. Even when boulders are flying fast and furious, gameplay is still sort of slow.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. Pause the game by pressing keypad numbers 1 and 9, or 3 and 7, at the same time; any keypad or side button resumes it.
- From the Intellivision manual. Buford starts with 3 chances to reach Horrible Hank and Tiny Mabel, and loses one whenever an obstacle hits him or he falls.
Before you buy
Imagic shipped two keypad overlays, so a complete copy should have both. A modern collector's edition (the Pro edition) is listed separately on this page; the original is the 1982 cartridge. The box and manual carry some of a complete copy's value, but loose carts are inexpensive.
