Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

An early college football game built on EA's Madden engine, and a very cheap cart.

This is the Genesis version of Bill Walsh College Football, developed by High Score Productions and published by EA Sports. It came out in North America in August 1993 and in Europe in September 1993. It takes the familiar play of EA's Madden games and sets it in the college game, built around the name of coach Bill Walsh.

Mean Machines Sega, previewing it, described larger player graphics, college touches such as the triple option and two-point conversion attempts, 24 top college teams plus 24 all-time great teams, and a panning stadium camera. Electronic Games called it the latest revision of EA's football engine. Computer Gaming World in 1993 said the Genesis version provided the best sports action yet seen in a cartridge product.

What the press said at the time

“Bill Walsh College Football is an excellent simulation with great presentation and a worthy challenge.”

— Diehard GameFan, September 1993

“Bill Walsh College Football does have its minor problems, but don't let that stop you from playing it. Electronic Arts has done it again — this cart's in the running for the Heisman!”

— GamePro, September 1993

“this one really shines. The overall effect is a more exciting, emotional game than John Madden.”

— Game Players, May 1994

Among US carts it sits below the middle, so it is an easy cart to buy. The European cart usually costs much more than the US one. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it for some modes, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play.

The Sega CD version

EA's college football game with Bill Walsh himself on the disc, playing much like the cartridge but with CD extras.

On the Sega CD, Bill Walsh College Football reached North America in December 1993 and Europe in March 1994. GameFan's December 1993 issue said the disc adds digitized video of Bill Walsh offering play-calling strategies, CD-quality audio commentary from Walsh and team rating cards covering 15 attributes for each team.

GamePro, in February 1994, said the game play is the same as on the Genesis, with 24 all-time great college teams and 24 top programs from the 1992 season. Electronic Gaming Monthly described Madden-style play with a scaling field and CD sounds, and counted it among the most playable of the CD games.

How it was made

High Score Productions developed it and EA Sports published it.

What the press said at the time

“Walsh CD is an excellent first effort on the new medium and is a good indication that EA Sports sees potential in the Sega CD.”

— GameFan, December 1993

“If you own a Mega-CD Bill Walsh College Football is a must-buy with atmosphere and playability leading the way.”

— Sega Pro, March 1994

Before you buy

On loose price it sits near the bottom among North American Sega CD games. The European disc usually costs far more than the US one, loose and complete, so pay the European premium only if you own a European Mega-CD; the US disc is the one for a North American Sega CD. As a December 1993 release it should come in the tall plastic case, which cracks easily, so check that the case and manual belong to this game.
