Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A competent Master System take on Sega's arcade stealth-and-shooting game, and a cheap one.

Bonanza Bros. came out in Europe in December 1991, published by Sega with Sanritsu as the developer of the Master System version. It is a conversion of Sega's arcade game, which was also ported to the Mega Drive and several computers. Console XS rated the Master System version highly.

“A conversion of the so-so coin-op, Bonanza Bros plays much the same as the original, but is far too easy to complete and only has a one-player option. Doh! Not the greatest cartridge money can buy...”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“As Robo (his bro’s gone missing in this version), break into buildings, collect swag and shoot or stun guards. A cash-grab¬ bing sub-level adds depth to this wacky coin-op conversion, which features unusual Lego People graphics.”

— Sega Master Force, September 1993

“Great graphics and some extra bonus stages. Primarily a two-player game. but iťs aiso brilliant in one player as you try to find the loot on ten frantic stages.”

— Sega Pro, September 1993

“Great graphics and some extra bonus stages. Primarily a two-player game, but iťs aiso brilliant in one player as you try to find the loot on ten frantic stages.”

— Sega Pro, October 1993

How the Sega Master System version differs

Ports of the arcade game, the Master System one included, show minor graphics differences depending on the system, and some gameplay changes, mainly in the bonus stages.

Before you buy

The European cart is the one to look for, and loose it costs less than the typical European-only game. A complete copy costs more than a loose one, though both are cheap.

The Sega Genesis version

A Genesis take on Sega's stealth action arcade game that Console XS found very easy.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Sega's Bonanza Bros., a side-scrolling stealth action game that began in the arcade on Sega's System 24 board. Sega made the home cartridge itself. It came out in Japan on 17 May 1991, and in North America and Europe in November 1991.

Mega Zone magazine enjoyed the Mega Drive version for its digitized speech and wit. Console XS praised its presentation and neat graphics but found it very easy.

“Even on the harder setting. Bonanza Bros doesn't represent a serious challenge !o a hardened games player due to the wealth of credits.”

— Mean Machines, July 1991

“The two-player action is fun, but at the end of the day what you need is a challenge, and unless you're a games novice, this simply fails to deliver.”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“Dodge guards and guard dogs and subject your characters to all sorts of jolly sight gags (standing on rakes, crashing through walls). Stylised bubbly graphics look great. Is INCREDIBLY easy to complete.”

— MegaTech, May 1993

“Puts the fun back into two-player fun, but don’t attempt a one player game.At £19.99 this is worth”

— Mega, July 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, and the Japanese Mega Drive cart usually costs less still. Japanese carts are a different shape from Western ones and do not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
