Bob Whitehead's Boxing, one of Activision's first games and a neat two-player duel, cheap loose.

Boxing is an overhead boxing game for one or two players, programmed by Bob Whitehead and published by Activision in August 1980. It was one of the first games Activision released.

Whitehead based it on Boxer, an unreleased 1978 Atari arcade game written by Mike Albaugh at Whitehead's previous employer. It is a 2600-only game and a piece of early Activision history at a low price.

How it was made

Programmed by Bob Whitehead and published by Activision in August 1980, with a PAL release in 1981. It is based on Boxer, an unreleased 1978 Atari arcade game by Mike Albaugh.

Worth knowing

  • An arcade game that never shipped. Boxing is based on Boxer, a 1978 Atari arcade game that was never released. Its author, Mike Albaugh, also wrote Atari's Drag Race, which Activision cloned as Dragster.
  • Sold as "rare" in 1986. By spring 1986 the 2600 market had moved on far enough that Computer Entertainer's mail-order list sold brand-new copies under the heading "RARE GAMES — THESE ARE YOUR SPECIAL PRICES", at $20.00 (good through 10 May 1986).

Before you buy

Low risk; early Activision carts were made in quantity and are not reproduction targets. Two listings are priced: the standard cart and a Blue Label variant. Loose they cost about the same, while boxed Blue Label copies cost more. Check which label is in the photos if you are paying for the Blue Label box.
