A quirky puzzle-platformer built around a talking stick, and a better game than its obscurity suggests.

This is the Genesis version of Bubba 'n' Stix, developed and published by Core Design. It came out in North America in July 1994 and in Europe on 1 July 1994, and the American release carried a promotional tie-in with Bubblicious bubble gum. You play Bubba, a redneck character, with a sentient stick, Stix, that can be wedged into holes to climb higher.

Mean Machines Sega called it a rather smart little puzzler that eases the player into its puzzles, with teleporters, switches and water outlets adding to the fun. Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers praised its original concept and challenging puzzles.

“Balance is the thing, then; for a game in this style to really work, there must be equal amounts of brain-teasing and button-bashing. And the good news is, Bubba n* Stix manages this delicate see-saw act with style.”

— Mega, March 1994

“In terms of graphics and sound, Bubba 'n' Stix is well up to the usual Core Design standards, and although it's very similar to the Amiga original, it's still impressive.”

— Sega Magazine, June 1994

“B&S is a really beautiful game in every department, but the game is way too hard-way, way too hard. This is the ultimate challenge for puzzle game enthusiasts.”

— Diehard GameFan, July 1994

“Lots of gorgeous, colourful graphics, loads of well ’ard puzzles, wicked animation and huge levels.”

— MegaTech, April 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits slightly above the middle. The European cart usually costs noticeably more than the US one, so the US cart is the cheaper way in.
