A Konami-made platformer for young children that Electronic Games found better than a licensed game had any right to be.
Konami developed Adventures in the Park and Coleco published it in 1984, in the wake of the video game crash and at the height of the Cabbage Patch Kids craze. Wikipedia quotes a retrospective calling it Coleco's attempt to use a rising property to give a boost to a falling one, the ColecoVision itself. You play Anna Lee, who in the manual goes out for exercise in the local park and is swept into a wild adventure across screens with different combinations of obstacles.
Electronic Games reviewed it in February 1985 and was pleasantly surprised. It judged the game aimed at children under ten, with a simple storyline and colorful, somewhat overly cute graphics, but found the play close to Coleco's Smurf game and challenging enough on its higher levels to interest older players.
How it was made
Developed by Konami and published by Coleco.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 2 | May 1984 | Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★½ |
“This is a totally charming game, from its beautiful graphics and delightful music to the amusing situations.”
“More of a surprise, and a pleasant one at that, is that unlike many licensed games, Cabbage Patch Kids is pretty good.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
How the ColecoVision version differs
A 2600 version of the game was finished in September 1984, after Coleco had stopped its 2600 operations, so it never came out. AtariProtos said it kept all the gameplay but could not match the ColecoVision version's graphics.

- NABU. A reskinned version called Kiddy Park, without the Cabbage Patch Kids license, came out on the NABU network computer in Canada.
Worth knowing
- The 2600 version that wasn't. AtariProtos, quoted by Wikipedia, describes a 2600 version of the game that was finished in September 1984, after Coleco had already stopped its 2600 operations, and calls it an amazing feat of programming even though it could not match the ColecoVision's graphics.
- From the ColecoVision manual. The game has more than fifty screens, and you start with three Cabbage Patch Kids.
- From the ColecoVision manual. A bonus Kid is earned at 10,000 points and another for every 20,000 points after that.
Before you buy
Plays with the standard controller and has no keypad overlay; do not confuse it with Cabbage Patch Kids Picture Show, a separate Coleco title that does use one. The price row shows a real step from loose to boxed to sealed, so the box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value. It is a Coleco-published cartridge with no documented authenticity problems.
