About Cabbage Patch Kids: Picture Show

Gameplay is identical to that of Smurf Paint & Play Workshop, in that players can draw and create their own scenes, or choose from any one of four background scenes and start to add clip-art objects, furniture and free form design. Create any number of decorated scenarios and then use either controller to change into one of four Cabbage Patch Kids characters and play around in the graphic you have created. Characters are able to move left, right, up, down... jump and drop. Though you can record your animations and play them back, there is no method of saving your work, so it all disappears when the power goes off.

A children's painting and staging toy built around the Cabbage Patch license, worth owning mainly if the keypad overlay is still with the cart.

Coleco released Cabbage Patch Kids Picture Show for the ColecoVision in early 1985, with O.A.A. credited as developer. It is not an action game. Computer Entertainer, which rated it well, described a creative toy: the child paints a blank screen, or uses preset scenes such as a backyard, living room or kitchen, and places props and Cabbage Patch actors on it.

The actors can be animated to move, fall and jump, music can be chosen, and the whole scene can be saved and played back later. That is the appeal of the cartridge: a simple stage for kids, from the same period as Coleco's other children's titles. It is a different game from Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventures in the Park.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 11February 1985Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★

“Such benefits as pre-reading skills, as well as narrative sequencing can be learned while the child is enjoying their”

— Computer Entertainer, February 1985

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Recorded shows run until you press OPTION or time runs out, and all recorded material is erased when you shut off or reset the machine.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Four blank screens can be flipped through to create a simple animation sequence like the one in the built-in demonstration.

Before you buy

This is one of the keypad overlay games, so a complete copy includes the overlay, and an overlay-less cartridge is much harder to use. Plays with the standard ColecoVision controller, and the keypad is central. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value. Check the overlay's condition, since printed plastic sheets tend to be worn or missing, and repro overlays exist if you need one.
