A one-player Vietnam shooter on the Genesis that is priced above most US carts.

Caliber .50 is a scrolling shooter that began as a SETA arcade game in 1989. The Genesis version came out in North America in December 1991, developed by Visco and published by Mentrix Software. Unlike the arcade game, the Genesis cart is single-player only: you control Captain Addis of the United States Army, who must rescue his fellow soldiers twenty years after he failed to retrieve his men during the Vietnam War.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199433%

“Vertically scrolling shoot-'em-ups are fairly common and to be any good they need something extra special. Calibre .50, sadly, is very mediocre.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version is single-player only, with the player as Captain Addis, a Vietnam veteran returning to the Ho Chi Minh trail.

It expands on the arcade game with extra stages and bosses.

  • Arcade. In Japan the arcade game ranked second among table arcade units in Game Machine's December 15, 1989 chart.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is priced above about nine in ten, so this is a game to buy from a seller who shows the cartridge and a copy of the manual. The risk of a fake is low. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
