A tongue-in-cheek election strategy game that tries something no other ColecoVision cartridge did, and a fair collector's pickup.
Campaign '84 was one of Sunrise Software's ColecoVision releases, with VSS credited as developer. Computer Entertainer described it as an educational game in which you raise campaign funds, strengthen your stand on the issues and plot a route across the country.
Electronic Games reviewed it in October 1984 as an innovative action and strategy contest for one player against the computer or two players head to head, with electoral votes as the prize. Before the race you choose your party's position on a list of issues, and the magazine noted that some of the choices were jokes, such as outlawing argyle socks. It was published in an election year, which is most of its appeal today.
How it was made
Sunrise Software published it, with VSS credited as developer; Electronic Games reported in May 1984 that Sunrise planned Atari computer and Commodore 64 editions too.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11 | February 1984 | Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★★½ |
“The graphic and music in CAMPAIGN '84 are good, but gameplay is the star attraction. The game requires thought, planning and strategy”
“Campaign '84 is one of the most interesting releases this year for the ColecoVision, blending action and strategy smoothly in a game challenging enough for adults, yet easy enough for children.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. You pick a stance for or against each of eight political issues before the campaign starts; the screen begins with you against all eight.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Skill level is chosen on the level screen (Beginner, Novice, Average or Pro) and stays fixed for the whole game.
Before you buy
Plays on the standard ColecoVision controller; no overlay is documented for it. The price row shows a loose copy only, so a complete copy with box and manual is the harder find and worth asking about directly. A US release from a small publisher with no known counterfeits, so buy for condition and test the cartridge.
