About Canyon Bomber
Canyon Bomber is a black-and-white 1978 arcade game, developed and published by Atari. The game was rewritten in color and with a different visual style for the Atari 2600, also in 1978. The player and an opponent fly a blimp or biplane over a canyon full of numbered, circular rocks, arranged in layers. The player does not control the flight of vehicles, but only presses a button to drop bombs which destroy rocks and give points. Each rock is labeled with the points given for destroying it. As the number of rocks is reduced, it becomes harder to hit them without missing. The third time a player drops a bomb without hitting a rock, the game is over.

An early David Crane port of an Atari arcade game, simple, cheap and on Atari 50.
Canyon Bomber started as a 1977 Atari arcade game programmed by Wendi Allen (credited at the time as Howard Delman). David Crane converted it to the 2600, and Atari released the cartridge in 1979.
It is a modest early title, but it comes from David Crane's years at Atari before Activision, and it is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration if you only want to play it.
How it was made
The arcade original was programmed by Wendi Allen. David Crane programmed the 2600 conversion, released by Atari in March 1979 and also sold by Sears.

How the Atari 2600 version differs
David Crane's 2600 port replaces the arcade's numbered round rocks with solid bricks whose color shows their point value.
The cartridge adds Sea Bomber modes in which players sink ships instead of bombing rocks.

Worth knowing
- 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Canyon Bomber (CX2607) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.
Before you buy
Low risk. Several labels exist. The standard Atari cart and the text-label cart are the cheap ones, and the Sears Tele-Games cart costs a little more. The grey box variant is collected for the packaging itself, so a complete copy in that box is priced far above a standard boxed copy. Check which box and label a listing shows before comparing prices.
