A late sports cart that Computer Entertainer recommended: spare graphics, fast play, and a computer opponent that bites at top speed.

Championship Tennis arrived in 1986. The library credits Nice Ideas as developer and Dextell as publisher, and Computer Entertainer's schedules listed it among INTV's new releases. The computer player's skill depends on the starting speed, and at the top Championship level the magazine warned of wicked passing shots. Graphics are spare but well animated, the sound effects add a tournament feel, and it recommended the game as a great addition to a system whose strength has always been sports.

It plays solo or with two players, unlike Mattel's earlier two-player-only sports games.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 5 No. 5August 1986Graphics ♦♦♦ · Play-Action ♦♦♦½

“Sports games have always been onc of the strong points of the Intellivision system, and CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS makes a great addition to the line-up. Graphics are spare but well animated, sound effects add to the tournament atmospherc, and the game is great fun to play.”

— Computer Entertainer, August 1986

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

Dextell's copies came with two overlays. Do not use this cart with the ECS attached; it is documented as not working with it. Mattel France finished the game, and the European release came first. A complete copy costs only slightly more than a loose cart, so buy complete.
