About Coach K College Basketball

There are three game modes: Season, Tournament (with three save slots for both) and Exhibition, and options follow the standard set from the NBA Live series. Gameplay also remains unchanged, with the typical three basic actions (fast running/steal, pass and shoot/block for A, B and C buttons) and the ability to call moves on the fly by pressing one of the buttons along Start (three or six moves can be set, depending on the joypad used).

A well-regarded college basketball game that deserves a look, and a cheap cart.

Coach K College Basketball was published by EA Sports in North America in February 1995 and built on the NBA Live engine. It was the first EA Sports college basketball game and the only one made for the Genesis. Electronic Gaming Monthly liked the large players and plentiful options, with 32 college teams plus championship teams from history.

Next Generation gave it four stars out of five and called it the best attempt yet at capturing the excitement of March Madness.

What the press said at the time

Game Players Issue 6/95June 1995Overall 94%

“The 'bottom line' in Coach *K* College Basketball is that the game is pure fun to play. Bringing defense into the game has really heightened the level of realism”

— Diehard GameFan, March 1995

“then this. has gotto be the one. Easily the best. 5-on-5 basketball cart available.”

— Game Informer, March 1995

“Let's put it this way— the only thing lacking from this game is a steal button. This game has got it all.”

— Game Players, June 1995

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The cart saves to a battery inside it in some modes, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair, not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play. EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games, while Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode.
