An early keyboard-controller puzzle game, a cheap curiosity that needs the right controllers to play.
Codebreaker is a puzzle game Atari released in October 1978, in the first wave of VCS games after the original nine launch titles. It was one of three cartridges launched with the Atari keyboard controller, alongside Hunt & Score and Brain Games.
The keyboard controller came out in response to claims that advertising the VCS as a computer was false. The game makes most sense today as part of that small family of keyboard titles.
How it was made
Developed and published by Atari in October 1978, and also sold by Sears.

Worth knowing
- 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Codebreaker (CX2643) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.
Before you buy
Low risk. Codebreaker needs the Atari keyboard controllers, so check whether a listing includes them if you want to play it. Three labels are priced: the standard Atari cart, a Sears Tele-Games cart and a cart PriceCharting lists as "Text Label". All are cheap loose. Check which one the photos show if you are collecting label variants.
