About Cosmic Commuter

WAY BACK IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, a bunch of Ivy League Professors sat around inventing space colonies. They were lauded as visionaries and went on as lecture tours. Do you think they thought about traffic jams in space? Somehow, we don't think they did. We're the G.T.A --- Galactic Travel Authority. The movers of the daily grind, circa 2075 A.D. And we're glad you're working for us now.

The game that failed playtesting and led to H.E.R.O., released a year after the hit it made possible.

Cosmic Commuter was John Van Ryzin's first project at Activision's New Jersey office. You fly an Astrobus along a horizontally scrolling route in the year 2075, picking up commuters at bus stops, collecting fuel and shooting meteors, fireballs and space mines, then return to the landing pad for a harder route.

After nine months of work, playtesters found it technically good but not fun, and it was shelved. Van Ryzin went on to make H.E.R.O., which came out in 1984. Cosmic Commuter followed in August 1985, and Computer Entertainer called it a highly simplified Defender-style game and did not recommend it.

How it was made

Designed by John Van Ryzin at Activision. He described it as influenced by the Apple II game Choplifter, and said the landing sequence was complicated to code. Prototype cartridges circulated in 1984 before the commercial release in 1985.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 4 No. 8November 1985Graphics ★★½ · Play-Action ★★½

“Collectors, of course, will want to have it, but it is not one of Activision's best efforts for the Atari 2600. (Solo play) Not recommended.”

— Computer Entertainer (The Video Game Update), November 1985

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

Medium risk. No fakes are documented. It arrived in 1985, late in the 2600's commercial life. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, so check that both are present. From November 2026 Atari is reissuing Activision games as new cartridges, so confirm you are buying a vintage cart.
