The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($12).

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A Codemasters adventure with platforming that came out only in Europe and now costs more than most European carts.

Cosmic Spacehead came out in Europe in November 1993, published by Codemasters. It is a remake of the NES game Linus Spacehead's Cosmic Crusade, an adventure in which locations are linked by platform sections. The Master System and Game Gear versions look similar to the NES one, but the gameplay is closer to the other 1993 versions for Amiga, MS-DOS and Genesis.

How the Sega Master System version differs

The Master System version includes the two-player Pie Slap mode, which the original NES game lacks.

Also on other platforms

NES · Amiga · MS-DOS · Game Gear · Genesis

  • NES. The original NES game came as a stand-alone cartridge and as one of seven games for the Aladdin Deck Enhancer.
  • Game Gear. GamePro called the Game Gear version a great point-and-click text adventure and praised its cartoonish graphics.

Before you buy

Only the European cart exists. It sits above the typical price for European-only carts, but the look-alike risk is low. A US buyer can use it, since the US console plays European carts, and the manual is the part most often missing from a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

A quirky Codemasters adventure that sits at the middle of the US price range, with a pricier European cart.

On the Genesis, Cosmic Spacehead is a Codemasters adventure developed by Supersonic Software and released in North America and Europe in November 1993. Its locations are linked by platform sections, and its art style differs from the earlier NES game, Linus Spacehead's Cosmic Crusade.

Mean Machines Sega listed it among its Mega Drive reviews as a thoroughly bizarre arcade adventure from the makers of Micro Machines.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199483%

“despite the Jetsons-style graphics and jolly feel, it doesn't really work. Only very young or Inexperienced gamers will get any sort of satisfaction from Cosmic Spacehead”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“Another addictive and cleverly adapted adventure from Codemasters featuring an interactive cartoon that will suit mostly young games players.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis art style differs from the NES version, as do the Amiga and MS-DOS versions.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the middle. The European loose cart usually costs more than the US one, while a complete copy costs about the same in either region. The Mega Drive version was also put on a Codemasters 2-in-1 cartridge with Fantastic Dizzy, so check which cartridge a listing really is. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
