About Crack'ed

Crack'ed was developed concurrently for the Atari 2600 and 7800, but only the 7800 version was released. The 2600 version only has three levels as opposed to six on the 7800, but those three levels are well utilized considering the limitations of the 2600. As an Ornithologist, you must protect the eggs of the South American Hornbill that are nested in your tree. Various predators attempt to steal the eggs from under your nose. Using your slingshot, you must defend the eggs until the timer runs out. If a predator steals an egg you still have a chance to save it, but you risk losing other eggs from the tree while you are distracted. Next you must protect the Hornbills that have chosen to nest in the sewers, where the gameplay is the same as the tree level. Finally you move onto a bonus round at the Rooster Ranch, here you must shoot roosters that pop out of windows. The Atari 2600 version of Crack'ed was released at the 2002 Classic Gaming Expo, complete with a unique label, box and instructions.

An egg-defense shooter ported from the Atari ST, remembered for stiff joystick aiming.

Crack'ed is an Atari ST game by Robert Craig (credited as Robert Neve), and Atari Corporation published a 7800 port in 1989 by the library's dating. You protect eggs by shooting the predators that come for them, aiming a crosshair. On the ST that is a mouse job; on the 7800 it is the standard joystick, and the XG-1 light gun is not supported.

The joystick is where it falls down. A retrospective at Atari 7800 Forever scored it low, criticizing the stiff controls while praising the original idea. A 2600 version was also started and never released, and an AtariProtos writer who played that prototype said it made a decent 2600 game even though it was a mediocre one for the 7800. Treat the 7800 cartridge as a curiosity, not a showpiece.

What the press said at the time

“Although the sound is merely adequate, the graphics are attractive and colorful. The screens look like coloring book drawings, and the characters at times are a bit too cute to want to shoot.”

Before you buy

Low risk and common. Pro-Line joystick, one player; the light gun does not work with it, so do not pay extra for a gun bundle. It carries the Atari color label and CX 7836 number. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
