A Sega action-adventure that Mean Machines Sega called action-packed but short on originality, and a middling-priced cart.

Cyborg Hunter was developed by Sega and released in Japan on 1 December 1988 as Chōon Senshi Borgman, then in North America in January 1989, published there by Activision, and in Europe in July 1989. It is a Master System game with no other platform versions to confuse it with. The mission is to penetrate a well-defended complex, destroy the robots inside and confront the man behind them.

Mean Machines Sega called it jolly and action-packed but thin on originality and good graphics. Computer Entertainer had announced it in 1988 as one of three Activision games made for the Sega console.

How it was made

Developed by Sega, with Hirohiko Yoneda, Yasushi Yamaguchi and Kamereon Aki credited as designers.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 1992OVERALL 71%

“The mission of this arcade adventure involves pene¬ trating a well defended complex, destroying all the robots therein, and finally confronting the man behind it. It's all quite jolly and action-packed, but originality and good graphics are very thin on the ground.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

Before you buy

Three releases exist: the US cart, the European cart and the Japanese cart. Loose, the European cart usually costs less than the US one, but a complete European copy costs more, so decide on the box before choosing a region. The Japanese cart is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. The look-alike risk is low.
