A strange, ambitious top-down shooter-RPG hybrid that nothing else on the platform resembles.

Dark Arms takes the Beast Busters arcade name somewhere completely unexpected: a top-down action game in which you grow your weapons by planting the souls of the things you kill and harvesting them later. It is a genuinely odd design, it is atmospheric in a way handheld games of 1999 rarely attempted, and it has a real cult following.

It is on NEOGEO POCKET COLOR SELECTION Vol. 1 for the Nintendo Switch, which has given it a second life with people who never saw the cartridge.

Before you buy

The boxed premium is where the money is, so reprinted packaging matters as much as the cartridge here. The game also saves progress to the cartridge, so a working save battery matters more here than on the fighters — ask the seller to confirm a save survives a power cycle before you buy.
