A polished, well-regarded Genesis platformer that is inexpensive in North America and Europe.

This is the Genesis version of Disney's Aladdin, a platformer developed by Virgin Games and published by Sega. It came out in North America on 19 October 1993, in Europe on 22 October 1993 and in Japan on 12 November 1993. It was the first Disney video game adaptation made with Disney's direct involvement, and Video Games & Computer Entertainment previewed it in July 1993 as a 16-megabit cartridge on which Disney animators worked with Virgin and Sega.

Edge called it the Mega Drive's new platform king, ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog. The game sold more than four million copies.

How it was made

Disney wanted the adaptation to match the film's artistic quality. Animator Mike Dietz used techniques such as holds, loops, X-flipping and palette cycling to fit the animation within the Genesis's limits.

“Quite simply a brilliant licence, it's stunning to watch, great to listen to, and fun to play - but much too easy.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“The best graphics ever on the Mega Drive that set a standard for others to foilow. … Super-smooth ánimatíon of every sprite makes this game a delíght to watch and play.”

— Sega Pro, November 1993

“Entertaining game play and revolutionary graphics make gamers wishes come true in Disney's Aladdin.”

— GamePro, November 1993

“Forget the Mega-CD - with this game. Virgin proves that movie quality animation can be achieved without the aid of a laser and a little silver disc.”

— Mega Drive Advanced Gaming, January 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Virgin developed digitization techniques to convert Disney's hand-drawn animation into sprites within the limits of 16-bit hardware.

Aladdin sold over four million copies and became one of the bestselling Genesis games.

  • Super NES. Game Players said the Capcom Super NES game lacks the Digicel animation but has smooth moves and personality, and a final boss better than the Genesis version's.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits just below the middle, and the risk of a fake is low. The European cart usually costs less loose and about the same complete, while the Japanese cart usually costs noticeably more, loose and complete. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy, and its complete copies usually cost less. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual. Japanese cartridges are a different shape from Western ones.
