Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A Tec Toy exclusive that brings Disney's mermaid to the Master System, and one of the cheaper Brazilian carts.

Ariel the Little Mermaid is an action-adventure based on Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid. BlueSky Software developed the game for Sega's Genesis, Game Gear and Master System, and the Master System version came out only in Brazil, published by Tec Toy in 1992.

How it was made

BlueSky Software developed the game, and Tec Toy published the Master System version in Brazil.

Before you buy

This is the Brazilian Tec Toy cartridge, an official release, and it is the only version to look for on the Master System. Loose it sits below the middle of the Brazilian-only games, and a complete copy costs far more, so the box is where the money is. The look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is there, since it is the part most often missing from a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

A weak Disney licence on the Genesis, and an averagely priced cart.

On the Genesis, BlueSky Software's action-adventure is based on Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid and was published by Sega. The Genesis cart reached North America and Europe in December 1992.

Reception was unkind. Reviewing the Mega Drive version for Sega Pro, Les Ellis called it the worst Disney video game and one of the worst games ever made. Consoles + found the levels weaker than other Mega Drive titles, though its critic Axel praised Ariel's animation and the look of the stages and wished for more variety between them.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199472%

“Ariel, on the other hand, shows that they can produce some really horrible stuff as well.”

— Mega, July 1993

“Use your skills, as either Ariel or Triton, to defeat the evil forces of darkness and save your buddy. Plenty of vicious sharks to deal with.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Critics generally compared it unfavorably to Ecco the Dolphin, finding it too easy and short.

Among US carts the price sits about at the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one loose, and about the same complete. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy and usually costs less. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
