About Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast

Roar of the Beast is one of two games based on the Beauty and the Beast animated film, the other game being Belle's Quest. This time the player does not control Belle but Beast throughout the entire game. It is not a sequel to the first game, as both games were released in the same year. This title largely retells the story from Beast's perspective. It starts with Beast living in a castle in the dark woods with his servants (Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts). A powerful storm hits the castle and enchants all animals around it. Initially the beast needs to protect the magic rose against the creatures. Soon, Belle and her father Maurice become involved, and eventually the villagers who invade the castle.

A licensed side-scroller that is an affordable curiosity for Disney collectors.

Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast is a side-scrolling game that Software Creations developed and Sunsoft published for the Genesis in North America in 1993. It is one of two Beauty and the Beast games Sunsoft released for the Genesis in 1993, the other being Belle's Quest.

Because Belle's Quest shares its subject, check which of the two a listing is before you buy.

What the press said at the time

“Roar of the Beast is an action title with beautiful graphics, but the game play will scare you away long before you get the girl.”

— GamePro, January 1994

“Not even the final battle with the muscular villager can redeem this appalling game. It is just so, so awful.”

— MegaTech, February 1994

“The second of the two Beauty and the Beast games. This one is geared for young boys but even considering the age group, it just doesn’t control as well as it should. The graphics are above average and eye appealing.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, March 1994

“You notice very quickly how little there is to do … Lots of button pressing but not much else”

— MegaTech, March 1995

Before you buy

Among US carts the loose price is below the middle, so it is an easy cart to find cheaply. It came out only in North America. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
