Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A European Master System platformer that was a UK bestseller and is still cheap.

The Jungle Book was developed by Syrox Developments and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment, released in Europe in December 1993. It was the top-selling Master System game in the United Kingdom in March 1994.

Mean Machines Sega called it truly excellent, with smart graphics and compelling gameplay. The reviewer thought the kill-everything-that-moves action sat oddly with the gentle film but was fast and playable, and that the game is a bit easy once you have the controls.

How it was made

Developed by Syrox Developments and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment.

What the press said at the time

“Jungle Book is an enjoyable platform game for all Master System owners young and old alike. Its size and presentation make for an entertaining adventure”

— Sega Pro, December 1993

How the Sega Master System version differs

Gameplay is the same on every version, but technological differences between the systems forced changes to the level design, some of them drastic, so the Master System cart is one of six fairly different versions of the game.

The Sega Genesis version

A bright, well-animated movie platformer that is cheap on a US cart and, by one period critic's account, better than its SNES version.

This is the Genesis version of The Jungle Book, published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment and finished by Eurocom. It came out in North America in August 1994 and in Europe on 26 August 1994. You guide Mowgli through ten levels, swinging from vines and throwing fruit. Game Players in January 1995 praised its detailed graphics, catchy soundtrack and solid play, and said the Genesis version beat the SNES one for playability thanks to more weapons.

GamePro likewise rated the Genesis version above the SNES and NES versions for faster, more varied play and brighter graphics, though it found the controls imprecise at times. GameFan's 1994 awards named it the best movie-to-game translation on the Genesis / Mega Drive.

How it was made

Work on the Genesis version began in 1993 at Virgin Games, with David Perry programming, and it was meant to ship that year. It slipped when Perry and most of the team left to form Shiny Entertainment, and Eurocom finished it in 1994, keeping most of the work Virgin Games had already done.

“Smooth scrolling, superb animation, loads of character - it's all here. The game's great to play as well, with tons more in it than Aladdin and Cool Spot - and it's a lot less linear.”

— Sega Magazine, June 1994

“Alter taking a back seat to Aladdin, Mowgli emerges with a vengeance. Jungle Book has that same addicting quality that Aladdin has in that it looks as good as any cartoon on the silver screen. Matched with great control and an excellent layout JB is another Virgin/Disney classic.”

— Diehard GameFan, June 1994

“There's no doubt that platform fans will love this adventure, and as a Disney conversion goes, this is one of the best.”

— Sega Magazine, August 1994

“Good fun, but it's far too easy to have much lasting appeal.”

— MegaTech, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

GamePro rated the Genesis version above the Super NES and NES versions for its faster, more varied gameplay and brighter graphics.

Game Players said the Genesis version surpasses the Super NES one in playability, with more weapons.

Also on other platforms

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle, so it is an easy and cheap game to pick up. The European cart usually costs more than the US one, noticeably so for a loose cartridge. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately from the plastic-case copy; ask which one a listing is before comparing prices. The game has no particular fake risk.
