About Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone

The final game in the original trilogy. Billy and Jimmy Lee are returning from martial arts training when their paths cross a fortune teller. She tells them of a great evil in Egypt, their strongest adversary yet, and how the Rosetta Stones can aid them. This game features weapon shops where Billy and Jimmy can buy power-ups, tricks, energy and extra lives to aid them in their quest. Power-ups make Billy and Jimmy twice their size, increasing their damage done and range of attack. The character graphics have changed, moving away from cartoon style graphics to more realistic looking characters.

A competent but unremarkable Genesis brawler whose two-player mode is the point, and whose European cart is noticeably dearer.

This is the Genesis version of Double Dragon 3, which the Genesis cartridge calls Double Dragon 3: The Arcade Game. It follows the 1990 arcade beat 'em up in which the twin martial artists Billy and Jimmy Lee are sent by a fortune teller named Hiruko to retrieve three Rosetta Stones. Software Creations made the Genesis game and Flying Edge published it, in 1993 in North America and January 1993 in Europe.

Electronic Games, reviewing the Flying Edge Genesis cart in 1993, said two-player action is again the big draw.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199435%

“It's a fun tide-me-over with familiar characters and foes, but its graphic animation, sounds, control, and character moves get run into the ground”

— GamePro, February 1993

“Hopefully the final episode in the abysmal Double Dragon battle. Five stages of repetitive and graphically useless street fighting.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Electronic Games said the Genesis game lacked the sparkle of earlier episodes but that its slick graphics and fast action would please fans.

Sega Pro later called the Mega Drive version a complete flop.

  • Arcade. The arcade game was controversial for item shops where players bought power-ups by inserting real money into the cabinet.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs noticeably more than the US one, both loose and complete. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
