Konami's Genesis basketball game is fun with friends and fairly priced in the US, but dearer in Europe complete and in Japan.

Double Dribble: The Playoff Edition was developed and published by Konami for the Genesis. It came out in Japan as Hyper Dunk: The Playoff Edition in March 1994, in Europe as HyperDunk in April 1994 and in North America on 27 April 1994.

Game Players, reviewing the Genesis game, complained that Konami had beefed up the players but dropped the dunk screens of the arcade, NES and Game Boy versions, and said it did not look like a game made by people who know basketball. GameFan was warmer, enjoying its fun factor, its big characters and its eight-player option.

What the press said at the time

Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 58May 19946, 5, 5, 5, 5
GamePro2.5/5

“I nstantly playable; devilishly addictive; what more can I say? Within minutes of plugging in this cartridge you’re slamming the ball and swinging on the ring after a Tomahawk slam dunk or one of the many special shots.”

— Sega Pro, March 1994

“Double Dribble is an interesting entry into the basketball genre, but the game play lacks control and the game needs more fine tuning. The Password Option is good, but overall, the game just ends up average.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 1994

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Genesis version.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits about at the median. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs much more. The Japanese Mega Drive cart (Hyper Dunk) usually costs much more and has a different cartridge shape from a Western console's slot. Sega Retro lists it as working with Sega's Team Player. It is a cheap-tier game with no per-game fake concerns.
