About Dr. Seuss Fix-Up the Mix-Up Puzzler
Designed for children ages 4–10, Dr. Seuss' Fix-Up the Mix-Up Puzzler is an electronic sliding puzzle featuring six Dr. Seuss characters: the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, a Star-Bellied Sneech, the Doorman, and the Woset and Clark. The object of the game is to reassemble scrambled pictures, each of which is composed of three characters. There are five difficulty levels from which to choose. In the easiest level, kids can mix and match the characters' heads, torsos and feet any way they like. In higher levels of play, there are more puzzle pieces, some of which are upside down, and characters must be assembled in their original left-to-right order. Puzzles range in size from 9 to 25 pieces. The fifth level has a time limit which, when beaten, will give the player bonus points.

A gentle sliding-picture puzzle for small children, ColecoVision-first and mainly of interest to collectors.
Coleco developed and published Fix-Up the Mix-Up Puzzler for the ColecoVision in 1984, and it was later ported to home computers. The player reassembles scrambled pictures, each made of three Dr. Seuss characters drawn from a cast that includes the Cat in the Hat and the Grinch. Coleco aimed it at children from four to ten, and Wikipedia notes the game claims to promote problem-solving and pattern recognition.
Computer Entertainer reviewed the cartridge in an issue that also covered Fortune Builder, but the surviving text does not say what it concluded. Treat it as a children's cartridge rather than something to play for challenge.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 3 No. 8 | November 1984 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½ |
“In addition to crisp, colorful, and cute-as-a-button graphics, this is a fun game to play. … It would make a great game for a party!”
“This game fulfills any expectations that could have built up over the past year; it's cute, fun to play and captures that elusive Dr. Seuss quality perfectly.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
How the ColecoVision version differs
The ColecoVision version came first, in 1984. The game was later ported to the Apple, Atari and Commodore home computers.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. Designed for children ages 4 to 10, with five levels from very simple to very complex; Level One lets kids mix and match heads, torsos and feet freely.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Six Seuss characters can appear, three per puzzle, including The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch.
- From the ColecoVision manual. From Level Two some pieces are upside down and a ROTATE key on the keypad turns them right-side up.
Before you buy
The game uses a keypad overlay, so a complete copy should include it; reproduction overlays are available. A standard ColecoVision controller is all it needs. The box adds a modest premium over a loose cart.
