About Dracula

As the sun sets, Dracula rises, hungry for the blood of fresh victims. As Dracula, the goal of this game is to stalk the streets at night, feeding on people walking the streets, or by luring them out of their homes. As Dracula bites his victims, his actions will call the attention of the local constable who will try to slow him down by driving a stake into him. Dracula can respond by either turning one of his victims into zombies to attack the police, or by transforming into a bat to escape capture. Even the forces of nature are against the vampire, as wolves will attack him on foot, and hawks will drag away his bat form. Dracula must feed on a certain number of victims and return to his tomb before sunrise, or he will not survive to feed another night.

Imagic's tongue-in-cheek vampire game, more funny than scary and nicely drawn.

Imagic released Dracula for the Intellivision in March 1983. You play the vampire, starting in a graveyard and roaming the town to find victims. Electronic Fun said that contrary to its title it is not scary or violent but a tongue-in-cheek contest, while Video Games Player praised its lumbering walk, thunder and lightning, and rich detail, as well as the two-player mode in which one player is the Count and the other the victim.

Not everyone loved it: JoyStik gave it three of five stars as a so-so game with limited strategy. It is still a distinctive Imagic cart.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 12March 1983Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 7May 19833½ joysticks (of 4)
JoyStik Vol. 2 No. 1September 1983★★★

“This is a delightful game to play, and its effect is not particularly violent in spite of the subject.”

— Computer Entertainer, March 1983

“Dracula is best when played by two people. … The victims are a riot, too. Instead of scurrying around in fear, they nonchalantly stroll their merry way, oblivious to the fact that they are about to lose their jugulars to some maniac.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, May 1983

“Dracula involves limited strategy, sometimes rapid reflexes and is, overall, a so-so game.”

— JoyStik, September 1983

“Dracula's greatest asset is that it's a challenging game that's also humorous and lighthearted.”

— Video Games Player, November 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

Before you buy

Imagic included two keypad overlays. The cartridge alone is moderately priced; the box and manual carry a premium on a complete copy. Make sure you are getting the Intellivision version, since Imagic made one for other consoles too.
