About Dragonfire

Dragons have driven the Royal Court from the Castle "O we are lost, lost" laments the King. "Without our vast treasures we cannot raise an army 'gainst these accursed dragons. Our Kingdom must now languish under lizards!" "Nay, not so, my liege!" replied the young Prince. "None knows that Castle, those many bridges and storerooms, better than I. Give me leave and I shall loot those lizards of their plunder and restore my lord to his birthright." "Brave boy," said the King, fully pleased. "But," he added darkly, "beware dread dragonfire!"

Bob Smith's treasure-grab game for Imagic, a solid 2600 original that costs very little.

Bob Smith wrote Dragonfire and Imagic published it in 1982. You grab treasure guarded by a dragon while dodging its fireballs. It came out on the Atari 2600 first and was later ported to the Intellivision, VIC-20, Commodore 64, Apple II, ZX Spectrum, ColecoVision and TRS-80 Color Computer.

Smith put the game's source code into the public domain on May 24, 2003.

How it was made

Written by Bob Smith and published by Imagic. Released for the 2600 in North America in December 1982, with a PAL release in early 1983.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 10January 1983Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★★
JoyStik July 1983July 1983★★

“the original (2600) version is actually a bit better as a game, delivering more actual play value in spite of its more limited visual appeal.”

— Electronic Games, October 1984

“Though the characters in the game are familiar, the concept is original--not something that can be said about many video games these days. Game play is fast and challenging, particularly at higher levels.”

— Computer Entertainer, January 1983

“This is a very origi- nal set of cartridges from Imagic, though I prefer the 2600 edition. It's easier to duck and jump the fireballs, and to run around the trea- sure chambers, using the joystick controller.”

— Videogaming Illustrated, April 1983

“For fans of dragons who aren't so much into adventuring as they are lovers of fast-action videogames, Imagic's Dragonfire should be right up their drawbridge.”

— Electronic Games, May 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

The 2600 cartridge was the original. Reviewing the later ColecoVision version, Electronic Games judged the 2600 game slightly better to play despite its plainer graphics.

On the 2600, the Prince's footsteps are audible as he crosses the drawbridge, which helps with timing. In the ColecoVision version he runs silently.

  • ColecoVision. Electronic Games called its visuals the best yet seen on the system, with near laserdisc-quality water and a three-quarter-perspective castle. That perspective leaves less room for treasure in the castle rooms.

Worth knowing

  • Open source. Bob Smith released Dragonfire's source code into the public domain on May 24, 2003.
  • Footsteps on the bridge. Comparing it with the ColecoVision port, Electronic Games noted that on the 2600 "players hear the Prince's footsteps as he runs across the bridge, giving them a better, more rhythmic sense of timing".
  • Dealer cost collapse, 1983. A September 1983 classified ad pitching a part-time game dealership used Dragonfire as its worked example: "DRAGONFIRE, retail price $32.95, your cost is $6.95. You sell at $16.95".

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Loose carts are inexpensive. Boxed copies cost several times more, so check the box and manual before paying for a complete one. Make sure the listing is the Atari 2600 cartridge, since Intellivision and ColecoVision versions exist.
