The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Master System version ($10).

Also released on: Arcade · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Sega Master System/Mark III. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A polished Operation Wolf-style shooter that runs out of ideas quickly, and a cheap European cart.

Dynamite Duke is a conversion of Seibu Kaihatsu's 1989 arcade shooter, developed for the Master System by Sanritsu and published by Sega, released in Europe in April 1991. Computer and Video Games called it remarkably similar to the coin-op, with polished graphics and sound and limited but entertaining gameplay spiced up by plenty of power-ups.

Mean Machines later pointed to it as proof that the Master System could handle Operation Wolf-style 3D shooters.

The Sega Genesis version

A behind-the-shoulder shooter that looks good on the Genesis but is over too quickly, and a cheap cart to try.

Dynamite Duke on the Genesis is a conversion of Seibu Kaihatsu's arcade shooter, developed by Hertz and published by Sega. Japan got it on 27 October 1990, North America in December 1990 and Europe in April 1991. The arcade game has nine stages, while this version has six.

Reviewers liked the Operation Wolf-style view and the well-drawn enemies, but found it far too easy. Sega Pro called the perspective effective and said the punks were fun to mow down before faulting how easy it was, and another period review said that only novices really needed to apply. Mean Machines said it was visually better than the Master System version but lacked lasting appeal.

Among US carts this one sits above the middle, though it is not expensive. The European cart usually costs somewhat more than the US one, while the Japanese cart costs about the same loose and noticeably more complete. A Japanese cartridge has a different shape and will not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
