A tough, well-animated Wolf Team platformer that costs a lot, and one to inspect before you pay.

El Viento is a platform game from Wolf Team, released in Japan on 20 September 1991 and in North America in November 1991 by Renovation Products. It is the first of a trilogy of Wolf Team games that includes Earnest Evans and Annet Returns, although it is set after Earnest Evans.

Sega Pro's import review said it looks great and plays like a dream, with animation and art that encourage you to go further even though it is tough.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 199280%

“The difficulty level is perfect, with the first guardian not too hard to reach, but consequent levels inereas-ing in hazards.”

— Sega Pro, November 1991

“A tough 'n' challenging platform game which doesn't look particularly hot, but is surprisingly addictive and keeps you playing for ages.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“If only it were true... … Not true, though. Yet Another Bog-Standard Beat-’Em-Up. Sorry.”

— Mega, July 1993

“It's a pity the long level one is so easy, apart from the irritatingly tough end-level guardian, but El Viento is an amusing and enjoyable game which deserves a quick UK release.”

— Sega Force, February 1992

Before you buy

Among US carts this is one of the priciest, so check it carefully and ask for a clear photo of the board. A flat Western-style shell with a notch is a repro sign. The Japanese cart usually costs more still and has a different cartridge shape, which fits a Western console only with an adapter or after removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
